What’s your story?

Hearing about the ways God works in our lives is all so very interesting.

Sharing our stories also helps others learn about God and to know that He is real, loves us, and is living with us.

Feel free to share your stories of the times in your life when God has made himself known to you and how it changed you.

    Dear Louise,

This probably falls into your “unexpected answers” category.

Friday, the 24th was an anniversary date of my wife’s death and I was expecting to have a rough day so I made plans in advance to meet with a pastor friend for lunch. I have been walking 4 miles a day in less than an hour usually in the early morning. God and I have some serious discussions during these walks.

We have lived in our house for over 5 1/2 years but had not met the neighbor lady who lives alone three houses away because she works nights and sleeps during the day. It was very rare to see her.

My walk takes three laps to complete and I was just about to finish the second lap when I saw her in her yard obviously digging a hole. I decided that my timed walk didn’t matter and that I should take the opportunity to introduce myself..so I did.

She shared that she was digging the hole as a grave for her pet cat that just died. Tears swelled up in her eyes. I offered my condolences and offered to help her dig the hole. She thanked me but said that it was actually therapeutic for her to do that. I told her that I understood because we had lost our cat that we had for 15 years last fall.

We small talked for a while then I continued on to complete the third lap of my walk. She was still digging when I passed her house for that last lap and we greeted each other.

When I got home I thought about how sad she was so I picked a few roses (the last of the season, but they smelled good), put them in a small vase and trekked back to her house. She had completed her ceremony and was back in her house so I knocked on her door. She answered. I gave her the roses and she commented that it was sweet of me and she invited me in to have a cup of coffee. During this time I had the opportunity to share that I had lost my wife to lymphoma.

We talked for about two hours about how important it is to have God in our lives and how He knows our needs. She said that I had “made her day” and that she thought that she was going to have a bad day of self-pity. I shared the same. It was definitely a “God thing” that we met when we were both in such great need.

Later that day, my pastor friend had to take a rain-check on our lunch because of an emergency she had to attend to. God knew that was going to happen and arranged for my earlier meeting with my neighbor. What a God we serve!! My spirits were lifted all day (as were my neighbor’s)!! Praise God!!

    Gary
